Global Slowdown To Hit Export: ESC

D K SareenThe ongoing global slowdown can hit the export growth rate of the nation for the current financial year. Country's growth target for 2009-10 may be revised under such hard circumstances. It is said by the Executive Director of Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), Mr D. K. Sareen in the sidelines of a conference on India Soft 2009 on Tuesday.

He said, "The last three months are very crucial. There is a spill off effect of the global meltdown on the Indian export sector. We need to wait and watch to what extent we will be impacted. We will take a relook at the growth targets of 2009-10 and might revise it, based on the figures we get at the end of the current financial year."

The export of India witnessed 30-33 per cent growth in 2007-08. Mr Sareen stressed the need to enter into the new and emerging markets of Latin America and South Africa to achieve the desired growth targets. He added, "Our export share to the US is 62 per cent while that to Japan is just three per cent. We need to tap the new and emerging markets."

Next conference on India Soft 2009 is scheduled for February 26 and 27 at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, by ESC with the help of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
