Stuttgart fire coach Veh - Babbel in charge

Hamburg  - VfB Stuttgart fired coach Armin Veh on Sunday after a string of poor Bundesliga results culminated in a 4-1 hammering at VfL Wolfsburg the previous day.

Stuttgart president Erwin Staudt spoke of a "difficult decision." He said that former Germany defender Markus Babbel was now in charge and would hopefully "bring the team back on to the road of success."

Babbel was an assistant coach in Stuttgart after ending his playing career there in 2007. He is now team manager while the daily training is to be conducted by Rainer Widmaier.

Veh, 47, came to Stuttgart in February 2006 and led them to a surprise Bundesliga title in 2007.

Higuain and Sneijder join Real Madrid injury list

Madrid  - Youngsters Gonzalo Higuain and Wesley Sneijder have joined Real Madrid's lengthy injury list, after Saturday's tight 1-0 home win over Recreativo Huelva.

Higuain was stretchered off with a sprained left ankle, and will be out of action for around a week.

He will miss Tuesday's crucial Champions League clash away to BATE Borisov, and possibly next Sunday's league game away to Getafe.

Higuain is to be replaced by fellow Argentine Javier Saviola, who has hardly played since joining Real from Barcelona in 2007.

Sneijder limped out of Saturday's game with a pulled muscle in his right thigh, and is doubtful for Tuesday.

Real Madrid second followed by Villarreal, Sevilla, ValenciaMadrid  - Real Madrid stumbled out of their crisis with a streaky 1-0 home win Saturday over spirited but naive Recreativo Huelva.

Real won with a 39th-minute goal from Wesley Sneijder, whose powerful left-footed drive took a wicked deflection off Huelva defender Beto and spun over hapless keeper Asier Riesgo.

The whites did not play well but could have widened their lead in the second half. Huelva showed some neat approach play but lacked power and decision in attack.

Inter Milan stretch lead on Juventus through narrow win

Rome  - A goal by Ghana's Sulley Muntari allowed champions Inter Milan to edge visiting Juventus 1-0 Saturday and move six points clear of their opponents atop of the Serie A.

Juve lost their midfield setup after two minutes when Portuguese Tiago Cardoso Mendes hurt himself and had to be replaced by the young Claudio Marchisio, as Inter produced massive attacks throughout the first half.

Dejan Stankovic tried to finish off a counterattack on 12 minutes but met the rough tackle of two Juve defenders and saw Alex Manninger save his header shortly afterward.

Swede star forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic on 25 minutes fired a first shot that caused no problems to Manninger before Sulley Muntari nodded wide off a free kick.
