Maldives plans to buy “new homeland” as insurance policy against global warming

London, Nov 10 : The President of Maldives has announced plans of diverting a portion of the country’s billion-dollar annual tourist revenue into buying a new homeland, as an insurance policy against global warming.

According to a report in the Guardian, Mohamed Nasheed, who is the first democratically elected president of the Maldives, has said that the chain of 1,200 islands and coral atolls, dotted 500 miles from the tip of India, is likely to disappear under the waves if the current pace of climate change continues to raise sea levels.

Nasheed said that this scenario threatens to turn the 300,000 islanders into environmental refugees.

Study: U.S. Heart Failure Risk Doubled in 25 Years

A study, reported at the American Heart Association meeting in New Orleans said that the number of people over 65 years who were hospitalized for heart failure had more than doubled over the last 25 years. The report is the first to document the increase in the disease across the country and estimates that this will cost the United States $34.8 billion this year for direct and indirect treatment costs and the incidence would keep increasing unless prevention measures are adopted quickly.

Breastfeeding can boost babies'' lung function

London, Nov 10 : A new study by UK and US scientists has revealed that the sheer physical effort involved in breastfeeding may leave babies with stronger lungs well into childhood.

Previous studies have established that breastfeeding protects babies from respiratory problems early in life, but the relationship with lungpower later in childhood is less clear-cut.

For the study, the researchers followed a total of 1,456 babies from the Isle of Wight all the way through to there 10th year to test this.

A third of them had been breastfed for at least four months, and on average, these children could blow out more air after taking a deep breath, and could blow it out faster.
