Killer whales are discriminating diners

Washington, Nov 9 : A new study has determined that killer whales can discriminate among the various species of salmon, which is their favorite meal, by listening to the echo structure created by each type of the fish.

According to a report in Discovery News, echolocation, which involves creating a sound in order to produce an echo, allows the whales to zone in on king salmon, also known as Chinook salmon, at distances up to half a mile.

To study this phenomenon, Whitlow Au, a marine mammal researcher at the University of Hawaii''s Hawaii Institute for Marine Biology, and his colleagues, mechanically recreated killer whale echolocation pulses at Lake Union in Seattle, Washington.

Mystery deepens over Antarctic mountain range buried under miles of ice

Washington, Nov 9: A new study has said that the existence of a massive Antarctic mountain range buried under miles of ice has become an even deeper mystery.

According to a report in National Geographic News, the little-researched Gamburtsev Mountains, the range in question, seems to challenge geologic patterns seen in other mountain ranges on Earth.

For one, the range is situated in the middle of the continent instead of on the edge, like most other mountains.

The range''s high peaks reach an elevation of about 10,000 feet (more than 3,000 meters)—heights typical of relatively young mountain ranges, such as the spiky Rockies and the European Alps.
