Ghalanai, Nov 11 : Tension gripped the Mohmand Agency tribal area after the NWFP government asked the tribesmen to expel militants and vacate houses ahead of likely military action.

According to the Dawn, exodus has started from the Anbar sub-division of the region and displaced people were heading towards Peshawar, Mardan and other areas to avoid military operation, local people said.

Washington, Nov 11: A new UCLA AIDS Institute study has found that a chemical from the Astragalus root, frequently used in Chinese herbal therapy, may help in the fight against HIV.

Like other kinds of cells, immune cells lose the ability to divide as they age because a part of their chromosomes known as a telomere becomes progressively shorter with cell division. As a result, the cell changes in many ways, and its disease fighting ability is compromised.

But the new study has shown that the chemical, TAT2, can prevent or slow this progressive telomere shortening.

Washington, Nov 11 : A new study by researchers at Ohio University has revealed that obesity raises levels of the hormone leptin, which can be a big threat to the cardiovascular system.

Leptin, a peptide hormone produced by fat cells, helps regulate body weight by acting on the hypothalamus to suppress appetite and burn stored fat.

However, an excess of fat in the body can produce too much of the hormone, which, in turn, can lower levels of bioavailable nitric oxide.

London, Nov 11: People who live close to pylons and high-voltage cables double their risk of dying from Alzheimer’s disease and senile dementia, a shocking new study has claimed.

According to boffins, a direct link between the electromagnetic fields created by power lines and all types of dementia has been found.

The study has been conducted by doctors at Bern University’s Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine in Switzerland.
