Big business executives should make sacrifices, give up bonuses: Obama

Chicago, Nov. 26 : US President-elect Barack Obama has said ''captains of industry'' are out of touch with what''s going on in Middle America, and said they should be ready to make sacrifices to get the country’s depressed economy back on track.

In an interview with ABC''s Barbara Walters, Obama said bank executives should forgo their bonuses this year as an example of taking responsibility in tough times. Executives should make sacrifices because so many other people are struggling, he added.

Pak to have ten new satellite TV channels

Islamabad, Nov 26 : The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has reportedly approved ten new satellite YV channels.

The decision to give new licences was taken at PEMRA’s its 51st meeting here Tuesday.

The approved channels include Pakistan’s first health channel. The Authority also granted landing right to a TV channel for children.

Besides, two educational institutions – Hazara University, Mansehra and Ziauddin University, Karachi – were granted non-commercial FM radio licences.

According to the Daily Times, the Authority also approved 145 new cable TV operator licences.

Thick clouds of pollution block sunlight in world’s major cities

Washington, Nov 26 : A new research has determined that the Sun is fading above major cities around the world as thick clouds of pollution prevent its rays from reaching the ground.

According to ENN (Environmental News Network), the research is part of a report known as the ‘Atmospheric Brown Clouds’ (ABC) report, by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The report indicates that the dirty brown haze, sometimes three-kilometers thick, stretches from the Arabian Peninsula to China and the western Pacific Ocean.

The clouds have blocked up to 25 percent of sunlight in many cities, with Guangzhou, in southern China, among several cities to record more than 20 percent reduction in sunlight since the 1970s.
