Mayawati says Sonia Gandhi’s birthday should be observed as ''Ghulami Diwas''

UP Chief Minister MayawatiLucknow, Jan. 15 : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Thursday used her 53rd birthday celebrations to urge her supporters to observe Congress president Sonia Gandhi's birthday as "Ghulami Diwas", or "Slavery Day".

Targetting each of her political rivals on the occasion, she also said that her predecessor and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav''s birthday should be observed as "Dalal Diwas", or "Brokers' Day".

Tsvangirai to meet regional leaders, Mugabe in Zimbabwe next week

Morgan TsvangiraiJohannesburg - Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Thursday said he planned to return home for a meeting with regional leaders and President Robert Mugabe on the implementation of a unity government.

Addressing journalists in South Africa, Tsvangirai said he would leave for Zimbabwe on Saturday.

The meeting in Harare was scheduled for next week, but no exact has been set, the South African Press Association (SAPA) reported.

Negotiations for power-sharing under a deal signed in mid- September have stalled, with Tsvangirai and Mugabe unable to agree on the distribution of ministries.

Pak Interior chief says 124 arrested in connection with Mumbai terror attack

Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza GilaniIslamabad, Jan. 15 : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's adviser on interior affairs, Rehman Malik, on Thursday said that the Pakistan Government has arrested 124 suspects in connection with the November 26, 2008 terror attacks on Mumbai.

"We have arrested a total of 124 people belonging to banned groups and are committed to working with India on the war on terror," Malik told a press conference in the Pakistan capital.

Star Wars-themed keyboard with Klingon alphabet hits UK shelves

Star Wars tops ‘Britain''s Favourite Soundtracks’ listLondon, Jan 15 : A Star Wars-themed keyboard, featuring letters from the Klingon alphabet belonging to Klingonese language spoken in the popular series, has now hit the shelves in UK.

Its creator Cherry Electrical Products said that it was planning to build computer accessories for other languages spoken in the Star Trek universe.

The Klingon keyboard has been especially designed for the thousands of science fiction fans who have learned to converse in the alien language.

East Asian growth to drop to 6 per cent in 2009, says UN report

Bangkok - Battered by the crisis in developed economies, East Asian economic growth is expected to drop to 6 per cent in 2009, down from 6.9 per cent last year and 9.0 per cent in 2007, the United Nations' World Economic Situation Prospects report predicted Thursday.

In South Asia, the UN's WESP report is forecasting 6.4 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 2009 compared with 7.0 per cent last year.

South Asia faces a serious problem with outflows of foreign exchange, it warned.

During the first two weeks of October last year, foreign exchange reserves fell by more than 17 billion dollars and in Pakistan, during the same period, foreign exchange reserves fell from 16.5 billion dollars to 7 billion dollars.
