Export growth rate may further decline: FICCI
Indian export sector could be adversely hit in the financial year 2009 following low demand in the international market. Export sector is facing stiff competition from China as there is substantial gap between prices of Indian products and Chinese products. 

A recently released report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) states that cancellation of orders due to low demand and unavailability of cheap funds is a major challenge ahead of Indian export sector.

Transporters to go on strike from Monday

Transporters to go on strike from MondayAll India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) would start nationwide strike from Monday. Transporters have been demanding decline in diesel price by Rs 10 per litre and uniform VAT of 4 per cent on fuel.

They alleged that government failed to save the interest of transporters while announcing special measures for other sectors in the recent stimulus package. Government should immediately pass benefits of reduction in prices of crude in international market to customers. It may be recalled that international crude rates currently stand at $38 from peak level of $147 during August 2008.

National Public Radio to cut 64 jobs to bridge 23 m dollar shortfallWashington, Dec. 13: Feeling the heat of worldwide sluggish economy, the Washington based National Public Radio (NPR) has decided to sack sixty four of its employees and discontinue two of its shows, more than 25 years after it began operations.

An NPR statement said that it would lay off seven percent of its workforce and eliminate two daily programs produced from its Culver City, California, facilities.

Ruia demands 12-year sales tax exemption

Dunlop Chairman Pawan Kumar RuiaDunlop Chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia, asked for 12-year sales tax exemption from the government to save the industry from impact of the global slowdown. The company needs Rs 70 crore to resume operations and it has applied for bank loan which would be sectioned within 2-3 months. Ruia is also meeting the state Labour Minister Mrinal Banerjee for seeking tax exemptions to achieve long-term revival plans of the company.

Jet Airways for executive pay cut

Jet AirwaysIndia's largest private airline, Jet Airways is thinking to reduce salaries and perks of its top management in line with its cost cutting measures. Earlier, few days before Diwali, it had decided to lay-off staff, following international credit crisis and loss booked by the airline due to high fuel costs and lower sales.

However, the company had to roll back its decision, following pressure from the government and politicians, who came for help of sacked employees.
