“Fringe elements” should be kept out of labour movement: CII

“Fringe elements” should be kept out of labour movement: CIIApex industry body Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has suggested that "fringe elements" should be kept out of the labour movement to avoid tussles between unions and managements.

CII president Adi Godrej, who is also the chairman of Godrej group, said, "The problem arises when external elements with a non-labour agenda come into the labour movement."

Referring to violent labour unrest at Maruti's Manesar plant, Mr. Godrej said violence of any kind couldn't be justified.

B Santhanam, deputy chairman of CII (southern region), said that the fringe element issue should be solved at the unit level, and should not be allowed to take centre stage.

To prevent the violent "fringe elements" from coming into labour movements, CII is working out a new strategy that will let unions and managements to avoid tussles. A part of the strategy will make managements to conduct better background checks of workers at the recruitment stage, while a more formal forum will allow unions and managements to exchange opinions from time to time so that any problem of fringe elements can be nipped in the bud.

Maruti, which suffered violence at its Manesar plant in Haryana, has already announced that it would start background checks of all of their employees. On 18th of July, violent workers killed one senior official and left around 100 others injured.
