Fresh snowfall greets Srinagar

Srinagar, Feb 4: Fresh snowfall greets SrinagarSrinagar received fresh snowfall on Monday thereby bringing relief to the residents from the extreme chill that was sweeping the Valley for past few days.

"We are happy after receiving fresh snowfall. Snowfall reduces the intensity of cold. We also get rid of impurities of water. We pray to God for more snowfall," said Imtiyaz, a resident.

Entire Srinagar is under a thick blanket of snow with trees, rooftops, roads and parks covered with excessive snow. Kids enjoyed playing with snowballs.

"There should be snowfall In Kashmir because that sets the ecological system right. There is power problem here, as there is no water. With snowfall, it becomes very good," said Shabir Ahmad, a resident.

According to reports from Gulmarg, 29 km from Srinagar, six inches to one foot of snowfall has been recorded at the resort. It also brings delight to a large number of skiers from within and outside the country. Gulmarg hosts Winter National Games from February 17.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for the second successive day on Monday due to fresh snowfall in the area.

A traffic department spokesman said fresh snowfall hampered road-clearance operation on the arterial road at Panthal, Patnitop and Jawahar tunnel.

Traffic on the highway was suspended on Sunday following landslides at Panthal and heavy snowfall at Patnitop and Jawahar tunnel.

The highway is the only road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. (ANI)
