Following the mission, U.S. space shuttle Endeavour lands in California
On Sunday afternoon, U.S. space shuttle Endeavour landed safely in California following a 16-day trip. The space shuttle had to make a landing here since unfavorable weather conditions in Florida prevented the shuttle from landing in its home base in Cape Canaveral.
Around 1:20 p.m. local time (2120 GMT), two sonic booms were heard by the residents across Southern California when Endeavour broke the sound barrier under the sunny sky since it was gliding into local airspace en route to Edwards Air Force Base, more than 150 kilometers north of Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Fire Department received at least one explosion call when people responded to twin sonic booms made by the space shuttle as it flew over the city.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported, “Fire crews were sent to an apartment building near Studio City north of downtown Los Angeles and checked out the apartment complex, but concluded that residents had heard the shuttle.”
Earlier in the day, NASA announced that the space shuttle had to be rerouted to California after it had cancelled two landing attempts in Florida`s Kennedy Space Center due to the high winds. In order to transport the shuttle back to Florida, agency will have to spend a whopping 1 million U.S. dollars by loading it atop a special Boeing 747.
Endeavour was marked as the premier space shuttle to land this year at Edwards Air Force Base that serves as NASA`s backup landing site for its space program.
Following a successful trip which had helped upgrade the International Space Station for housing bigger crews, the space shuttle and its 7-member crew were coming back when they had to make the unexpected landing. In order to repair the ISS`s power system, four spacewalks were also conducted.
