Fisker: Over $30 million worth of Karma luxury cars destroyed during Hurricane Sandy

Fisker: Over $30 million worth of Karma luxury cars destroyed during Hurricane SandyAccording to a Tuesday statement by the Anaheim, California-based green car-maker Fisker Automotive, the devastating Hurricane Sandy which lashed parts of Northeast US last week destroyed over 300 of the startup's Karma electric vehicles at a New Jersey airport.

With the cost of each of Fisker's Karma luxury cars being $100,000, the flooding of the Karma vehicle shipment during the hurricane implies that the automaker lost over $30 million worth of the plug-in hybrids.

Citing the information received by the officials of Port Newark, where the hurricane-destroyed Karma plug-ins sat, Fisker spokesman Roger Ormisher said that the over 300 Karma vehicles were among the over 10,000 vehicles which were damaged during the hurricane.

Noting that the destroyed Karma vehicles were to be sent to US dealers, Ormisher said that 16 of the cars got burned during the storm, while one car caught fire because of a short circuit caused by seawater; and fierce winds spread the fire to 15 other cars.

However, revealing that the Karma vehicles destroyed in the hurricane were insured, Ormisher said that the automaker does not expect the loss of the vehicles to cause any substantial impact on it from a "business or a financial point of view."

Stating that Fisker's Karma vehicles sitting at Port Newark were "completely done," Ormisher added: "We don't see this as having a material impact on our business."
