Finnish city cancels fireworks over storm warning

Helsinki - The northern Finnish city of Oulu cancelled its New Year's Eve fireworks display Wednesday over strong winds and a storm warning.

The display was postponed until Saturday, authorities said.

Emergency services advised people not to use fireworks in stormy areas to minimize the risk of potentially dangerous situations.

The weather services in Finland and neighbouring Sweden warned of strong winds Wednesday in the northern parts of both countries.

Trees felled by the strong winds and snowfall caused power cuts and blocked some roads in northern Sweden. (dpa)
