Final Greyhound Race to be Hosted by Raynham Park
The Raynham Park dog track will host its final greyhound race on Saturday, at 8. Starting January 1, there is a definite ban on greyhound racing, which means that over a hundred employees of the park will lose their jobs.
For over 14 years, Maureen Turicelli has been worked behind the park's betting counter, but now her shifts will definitely be cut. "It's like being at a wake, and not an Irish wake. The owners love these dogs. Why would they hurt their livelihood", said Ms. Turicelli while talking about the way the dogs are treated.
In November 2008, voters from Massachusetts put a ban on dog racing, thereby hurting the park and its many employees.
The track is owned by George Carney, who started working at the track as a lead boy at the mere age of 14. "I only went as far the 9th grade in school, because I figured why bother wasting my time when I'm making more money than the teacher. If we had done something wrong to cause the problem, then I'd be kicking myself. But we really never made any mistakes -- we employed a lot of people, raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the federal government, the state government", he said.
Park regulars are just as sad as the owners and employees, as they are now losing one of their favorite pastimes.
