FDA could soon approve first female libido pill

According to reports, a drug named “female Viagra” could be approved by a US supervisory body this week. It may open the door for its distribution all around the world. As per industry experts, within few days, flibanserin could be approved.

If it is approved, it will become the first authorized drug for low sex drive in females that will be available in the market. The drug fights a waning libido by targeting the pleasure centre of brain of a woman in place of the genitals. In trials, women who took the drug daily were having sex regularly and were also enjoying it more.

According to Fred Wyand, spokesman for the American Sexual Health Association, "This would bring another option to the table that doesn't currently exist. There really are not any medical options available for women who have low sexual desire. There just aren't a lot of choices out there". The American Sexual Health Association is a group that testified at an FDA hearing supporting flibanserin.

But there are also many safety fears linked to the drug. It has been found in major trials by manufacturers Sprout Pharmaceuticals that the pill that was initially created as an antidepressant was associated with side-effects like low blood pressure, fatigue, nausea, insomnia and drowsiness.

It is expected that the US Food and Drug Administration will give green signal to the drug in the face of earlier rejections of flibanserin as a result of these side effects.
