Election Commission reviews poll preparedness in Tripura
Agartala, Jan 17: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami and Election Commissioners, S Y Qureshi and Navin Chawla review poll preparedness in Tripura on Thursday.
During their daylong visit, members of the Commission will held discussions with representatives of political parties, Chief Secretary Shashi Prakash, DGP KTD Singh and four District Magistrates and Superintendent of Police separately.
CEC Gopalaswami informed that the Election Commission would take all necessary measures, including deployment of additional central forces in order to ensure free and fair elections.
He said that additional forces should remain for some time in the state after the elections are over to prevent post poll violence.
The CEC said that since the state is surrounded by Bangladesh from three sides so the Home Ministry has been asked to fence the border properly and.
A single-phase Assembly poll in Tripura will be held on February 23. Out of 60 seats, 20 seats are reserved for the Scheduled Tribes and seven for the Scheduled Castes.
The filing of nomination papers will begin on January 30 and will close on February 6. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is February 9.
The counting of votes would take place on March 7.
The current term of the Tripura Assembly ends on March 19. (ANI)
