Dutch coach Stevens to take over at Red Bull Salzburg

Dutch coach Stevens to take over at Red Bull SalzburgSalzburg, Austria  - Former PSV Eindhoven coach Huub Stevens is to take charge of Austrian league leaders Red Bull Salzburg from July, the club said Tuesday.

Stevens, 55, has signed a two-year contract and will succeed compatriot Co Adriaanse who is not extending his contract at the club.

Stevens has twice won the UEFA Cup, with PSV Eindhoven in 1978 and Germany's Schalke 04 in 1997.

He spent six years at Schalke between 1996 to 2002, has coached the German clubs Hertha Berlin, SV Hamburg and Cologne, and also had two spells at Dutch side Roda Kerkrade.

He took over at PSV Eindhoven before the current season on a two-year contract but resigned on January 28 with the side only fifth in the Eredivisie.

Red Bull Salzburg sports director Heinz Hochhauser told the club's website Stevens was an internationally-renowned and experienced coach and "an important appointment for our international ambitions."

Stevens said: "I've followed Red Bull Salzburg from the start and know the club's demands and ambitions. The facilities in Salzburg, the team's development and their ambitious plans made it easy for me in the end to opt for the Red Bulls."

Red Bull Salzburg are heading for a second Austrian Bundesliga title since the former Austria Salzburg was bought by the Red Bull company in 2005. With six matches remaining, they have a 10-point lead over defending champions Rapid Vienna.(dpa)
