Double Fine raises $3.3 million on Kickstarter for new adventure game
Video game developer Double Fine has raised an impressive $3.3 million on Kickstarter for turning a new adventure game project into reality.
As many as 90,000 users of the site pooled more than $3.3 million for the new adventure game project. A new post on Kickstarter’s blog said that Double Fine Adventure project has attracted more than 60,000 first-time backers, as the users are called. It also said that about a fourth of these new users contributed towards the project.
Tim Shafer of Double Fine is recognized for classic adventure games like Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle. The success of the fund raising exercise was a let down to the out-of-touch publishers who did not show much interest in the project when Shafer presented the opportunity to them. The Kickstarter campaign page for the game says that the game will be released around October 2012.
When Schafer did not see publishers showing interest in his project he approached kickstarter and explained the funding requirements and within a day more than 46,000 people had pored in the amount of $ 1.6 million for the new game.
Double Fine, which was founded in 2000 has been involved in the development of popular games including Pyschonauts, Brutal Legend, Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade, Once Upon a Monster, and Double Fine Happy Action Theater.
Shafer will lead a small team in Double Fine to develop the new point-and-click adventure game. Meanwhile, Player Productions will document the game development process and release monthly video updates exclusively to the Kickstarter supporters to allow viewers to become a part of the game development process from the initial stages to the release.
