DMRC to introduce automatic recharge for smart cards

DMRC to introduce automatic recharge for smart cardsThe Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is planning to introduce a new system to allow commuters to automatically top-up their travel smart cards for the network.

The DMRC will install new automatic fare collection gates that will allow smart cards to be recharged automatically by the commuters. The Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates will add a pre described amount to the card if the balance goes below the minimum limit and recharge the card while charging the commuters bank account.

"DMRC is procuring AFC gates with new technologies that will have the capacity for automatic top-up of smart cards. This will be done through the bank accounts of the card holders' electronic clearance system," said a Metro spokesperson.

An official explained that the commuters will have to fill a form giving their bank details and account number and specify the minimum recharge amount, in order to avail this facility. The new facility is expected to be rolled out to the commuters in the coming seven to eight months, according to the officials.

Under the current system, commuter can recharge tokens and smart cards from the counters by paying cash at specified counters, machines or customer care centres at Metro stations.
