DMK backs AIADMK on Lankan soldiers training issue

DMK backs AIADMK on Lankan soldiers training issueIn a rare display of unity on a matter, DMK Chief Karunanidhi has strongly backed Chief Minister Jayalalithaa of AIADMK in Tamil Nadu to oppose the training being provided to Sri Lankan soldiers in the country.

The ruling party has lashed out at the central government for not paying attention to the fate of the fishermen from the state who are being threatened by the Lankan army. Karunanidhi backed the stand and demanded that no training should be provided to soldiers from the neighboring country, which suffered from years of ethnical violence involving minority Tamils.

"Our feelings are not being respected by both the Sri Lankan government and the Government of India. We wanted the training happening on the island to stop, innocent fishermen were being attacked by them. The Jayalalithaa government has represented the sentiments of the Tamils," added DMK leader TKS Elangovan in support of the ruling government.

DMK MPs including Parliamentary Party leader TR Baalu have held a meeting with Defense Minister AK Antony and presented reasons for why the training programs should be cancelled. Training of Sri Lankan Army personnel have already been shifted from an Air Force Station in Tambaram in Chennai to anotehr base due to political opposition.
