DirecTV dropping Lowe campaign

Direct broadcast satellite service provider DirecTV has discontinued the ad campaign that has drawn complaints from rival Comcast Corporation.

Representatives of DirecTV said that they are thinking about dropping the Rob Lowe commercials in support of a new campaign. The major complaints are from Comcast. Comcast made claims for the Rob Lowe commercials and after considering the accusations made by Comcast, the National Advertising Division (NAD) suggested that DirecTV stop making some of the claims in the ads.

The NAD that examines such issues as part of the advertising industry's self-regulation efforts said that some of the claims weren't supported by the facts. Comcast stated that the Rob Lowe spots are “so outlandish and exaggerated that no reasonable consumer would believe that the statements being made by the alter-ego characters are comparative or need to be substantiated."

DirecTV has not completely agreed with the NAD's findings about some of the claims. It has been said that the company is going to appeal the National Advertising Review Board. It has been reported that findings of NAD are not lawfully binding, so DirecTV need not stop running the commercials.

DirecTV had already plans to end the Lowe ads by the end of April and the company reserves the right to bring them back. In majority of the cases, the Better Business Bureau National Advertising Division review board agreed with Comcast and urged DirecTV to pull or change the ads. This is not the first time that DirecTV has been charged with false or misleading advertising. Primary competitors of DirecTV are Dish Network and cable television providers.
