Computer and internet briefs
Washington - Need a faster internet connection? Who doesn't? Although the free Download Accelerator (http://www.speedbit.com) has been around since the days when dial-up was the primary means of getting online, the tool is useful for today's broadband connections as well. It can speed up your downloads by as much as 300 per cent, depending upon your connection. The program works by finding the fastest path for your downloads and general surfing. --------
Washington (dpa) - Need to edit a portion of a web address in your browser's address bar? Use a trick that enables you to jump from one portion of the address to the next. Hold down the Ctrl key as you click the right or left arrow key on your keyboard. The cursor will move one word at a time through the web address, saving you keystrokes, if you need to change just one part of the address. --------
Washington (dpa) - Avoid computer glitches by keeping enough free space on your computer's main hard drive. How much free space? A Windows C drive should have a minimum of 10 per cent of disk space free and nothing less. More will be needed for those who run large applications, such as photo and video editing software, that use part of the disk for virtual storage. In such cases, consider 25 per cent a good minimum. --------
Washington (dpa) - You don't have to abandon the keyboard when you surf the internet. You can use the Tab, Shift, and Enter keys to navigate the world wide web. Use the Tab key to step through links on a page or from one form field to the next. When a desired link is highlighted, press Enter to go there. To step backward through the links or form fields, hold down the Shift key and press Tab. (dpa)
