Centre To Issue Guidelines To Internet Service Providers
The internet service providers would be issued guidelines and instructions by the Centre, since the instances of sending threatening e-mails by the terrorists who hack into wireless fidelity (WiFi) networks, are increasing day by day.
R Chandrashekar, Specail Secretary of Department of Information Technology, informed, “We are always in constant talks with the Department of Telecom on security issues. We might take some action soon.”
This step has been taken by the centre, as the terrorist group 'Indian Mujahideen' has been using unprotected WiFi network to send emails at the very same time of the serial blasts in Ahmedabad and Delhi.
A senior official from a Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERTC-in) reported, “We cannot blame anyone if we forget to lock our own rooms. The ISPs should provide all these features of password and password protection.”
Iinstructions and guidelines, currently formulating in consultations with DoT and DIT, would be issued by the CERTC-in for the Internet Service Providers.
Security Agencies and the Ministry of Home Affairs, both feel that password protection should be made compulsory for every customer using the WiFi technology.
The militants during the time of the Ahmedabad blasts had taken the advantage of the unsecured WiFi system of an American national, Kenneth Haywood, while the network of a family in Chembur, Mumbai, had been misused during the Delhi blasts.
