CAG to help proper clean PDS for Food Security Act

Government-Of-IndiaAs the government of India is looking for ways to implement the Food Security Act across the country the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has swung into action and initiated an audit of the Public Distribution System in order to enable scam free implementation of the new scheme.

The government wants the bill which guarantees food grain to poor at subsidized rates to be implemented without problems of the past like underutilization large sums of money, fraudulent expenditure and fake beneficiary's records.

The act aims to offer food grains to the poor at Rs 3 a kg. The PDS is strained as the government was unable to bring down the prices of food grains even after addressing the supply side issues.

CAG will address the accountants general who are coming to New Delhi for a conference on April 5. The conference will seek at transforming audit into a tool for good governance. The proper checks will be put in place with the implementation of the act like verification of the list of beneficiaries, the amount of grains etc.

The checks in place would help the implementation of the new ambitious act in a better way so that it gives the results it is expected to deliver, that is effectively eradicate hunger from the country.

In a recent study in the north east region where most people depend on the state to prove food security showed that about 40% of eligible beneficiaries were without ration cards and effectively out of the PDS.
