Thailand's market for bulletproof cars takes off Bangkok  - With street violence and assassination attempts on the rise in Thailand, automobile companies have found a lucrative new growth market - bulletproof cars - news reports said Thursday.

This week Germany's BMW AG launched its X5 Security Plus model in Thailand, marketing the vehicle as the first to offer protection against AK-47 assault rifle attacks while Ford Motor Co has offered two bulletproof cars to the deputy prime minister in charge of security, The Nation newspaper reported.

Mercedes gives S-Class makeover, adds hybrid versionStuttgart - Mercedes is giving its luxury S-Class a makeover with several technical improvements and a hybrid version of the S 400 that will be unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show.

The car maker describes the S 400 as the first standard production hybrid drive fitted with a lithium-ion battery, making it the most economic petrol-engined luxury sedan.

Fuel consumption is listed at 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres which translates to carbon dioxide emissions of 186 grammes per kilometre.

The 2010 model Astra, also sold in Britain under the Vauxhall name, reveals a headlight design similar to the larger Insignia.

A special feature, found already in the Corsa, is an integrated bicycle carrier. A handle in the boot is pulled and the carrier plus registration plate slide out.

The engine range starts with the 80 hp eco-diesel to the top end 270 hp turbo OPC.

World premiere of Mercedes ML 450 HybridNew York - Mercedes presented the new ML 450 Hybrid fitted with two electric engines and a V6 engine with an output of 205 kW/279 hp at the New York Auto Show.

Developed especially for the North American market, it is the first full hybrid from a European manufacturer. The electric engines, which have an output of 62 kW/84 hp and
60 kW/82 hp, are integrated into the transmission.

According to Mercedes, the ML 450 Hybrid consumes almost 50 per cent less fuel than the ML550, although it boasts over 90 per cent of the maximum power generated by the V8 model.
