BSNL To Extend Broadband Availability In Rural Areas

State-run BSNL has decided to expand its broadband connectivity in the rural areas of country. It would provide high speed internet connection to about 1.48 lakh extra villages of India in the next six months. The state run telecom giant is currently providing broadband connectivity to 30000 villages. The company has set a target to connect all district headquarters and blocks with broadband connectivity by March 2009. It hopes to implement its plan by the end of March 2009.

The government will implement its plan soon after the allocation of spectrum.

It will connect 5000 villages through wireless internet service. That will encourage the use of internet in institutions such as schools, public health centers, village panchayats and the community service centers (CSCs). The government is also planning to start e-governance and related data services in the rural segment. The Department of Telecom (DOT) is doing every thing possible to allocate spectrum as soon as possible.
