London, Oct 24 : Almost nine out of ten dog owners in the UK love their pets to an early grave by feeding them cakes, biscuits and yoghurts, a new study has found.

The findings, from a poll of more than 1,000 owners by confectioner Mars, also revealed that 60 per cent of cat lovers are do the same to their felines.

The poll found that almost half of all dogs and cats in Britain are now officially overweight.

For example Beau, the Rottweiler of Farnworth, Lancs weighs 14 stone, while Fidget the cat of North Shields weighs 18lbs.

But the researchers also said that most owners are not aware of the health hazards it poses for animals.

Pet obesity isn't just about looks, the researchers said. Extra weight can lead to several health problems and even shorten an animal's life span by putting it at a greater risk of heart attack, diabetes and strokes.

Obesity can also cause joint problems, making it difficult for the pets to walk.

The study also found that pet owners are often slow to admit that their animals need to shed pounds, with almost half of the owners being proud of their obese pets.

“There is no doubt that our lifestyles have become more sedentary and so too have our pets’ lifestyles. This, combined with the association owners seem to draw between feeding and kindness, has led to this,” The Sun quoted Vet Alex German, as saying.

“What people don’t seem to realise is the dreadful consequences,” he added.

German advised owners who feed pets occasional treats to cut the size of main meals. (ANI)
