Boardman Relay for Life starts with Celebration
The Boardman Relay for Life always has something interesting when it starts and on Friday night, the Survivors Lap featured some enthralling stories. According to the Survivors Lap, it was for a number of people in the country who have been saved by the American Cancer Society due to the funding from Relay for Life.
On Friday, two individuals who have beaten cancer twice were holding a banner of the Survivors Lap at Boardman Center Middle School. It included John Whitinger, who is founder of Poland Relay. According to Whitinger, he came back to the place where his journey against the cancer had started.
Whitinger said it is very important for a cancer survivor to walk the very first lap. For him, it is like winning a battle against cancer, Whitinger added. Justine Ula, who had bone cancer, said her ultimate target was to beat cancer. According to her, she has succeeded in her mission.
Ula said, “Yesterday was a year that I finished up my second round of chemo. Having it twice and finishing again. Yesterday was a real feeling. It’s pretty cool”.
But the Relay is not just about survival. It includes a number of things like goods, food and some more items that could interest walkers after they finish their walks, and the people who want to support other to fight against cancer.
Audrey Poltor of Team Schein said that Tent City is more of a community environment. It is a place where a number of individual can come, and raise money for their teams, Poltor added. Apart from encouraging people to fight with cancer, it is real fun, according to Poltor.
This year, Boardman Relay for Life has gone retro. It has encouraged people to dress up like it was being held in the 80’s era.
