BMW reports 14 per cent increase in high end car sales
German luxury carmaker BMW, through its Indian subsidiary BMW India, has attained top slot in the country's luxury car segment, reporting a sale growth of 14% in the first half of the current financial year. The car maker sold 2,008 units in the reporting period, as compared to 1,763 units in the corresponding period last year.
BMW India President, Peter Kronschnabl said: "After seven months, we are number one. Our target is to stay number one in 2009 and we are very much on track." He hoped that the company will cross its target of selling 3,000 units in the current financial year.
BMW India reported a growth of 12.76 percent, selling 1,016 units in April-July, as per figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers; while its rival Mercedes-Benz sold just 853 units, reporting a decline of 21.02 percent.
The company, in a bid to expand its product portfolio, has also announced its decision to launch a two-seater roadster - Z4 - in India in the coming festival season. Mr. Kronschnabl said: "It's a niche model, so we are not expecting any big numbers. We hope to sell 40 cars every year."
