The Bank of America Corp is now testing a new technology that aims at allowing customers to make payments by just using their smarphones.
The bank is running a pilot test programe for a technology that would let customers make payments at store register by scanning an image using a smartphone like Apple’s iPhone and others running on Google’s Android platform.
The second largest bank in the US is holding the test programe at Charlotte, North Carolina. The initiative aims at keeping the bank ahead in the technology revolution that is expected to change the pay customers will use financial services and make everyday payments.
The bank has launched the test programem in association with five merchants in Charlotte. The pilot test will go on for a period of three years and only bank employees will have access to the new technology for making payments at the select merchants.
Bank of America has partnered with Paydiant to test the technology. The technology developed by Paydiant does not require the merchants to buy new phones or hardware as it uses existing smartphones to allow payment transfers.
Bank spokeswoman Tara Burke said, “The pilots provide us with the opportunity to explore innovative mobile solutions, engage our customers and utilize their feedback.”
