Auschwitz letter found in bottle at Polish school

Auschwitz letter found in bottle at Polish school Warsaw - Workers at a Polish school in Auschwitz have discovered a 65-year old note in a bottle written by Nazi concentration camp prisoners, local media reported onMonday. The note - written on a piece of paper likely taken from a cement bag - was found as workers were taking down a wall in the school's basement, reported the Polish Press Agency PAP.

The school building once served as an air raid shelter and belonged to the death camp's complex during World War II.

The note is 65 years old and contains signatures of seven prisoners: six Poles, and one man from Lyon, France.

The note lists in pencil the names and numbers of the seven prisoners, and says they were all between 18 and 20 years old and had built the air raid shelter.

The school's spokeswoman said the find will be given to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, PAP reported.

At least 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau, a Nazi death camp built on Polish soil, including Jews along with Poles, gypsies and Soviet prisoners.(dpa)
