Appoint sports director: Teachers

The Pune University Teachers' Assn asks UoP, affiliated

colleges to fill vacancies

The Pune University Teachers' Association (Puta) on Wednesday demanded that the University of Pune (UoP) and its affiliated colleges should fill the vacant posts of sports director and director of physical education respectively for the benefit of students involved in sports activities.

Addressing a press conference, the teachers' association alleged that around 70% of the university affiliated colleges are yet to fill the vacant posts of the director of physical education.

Puta general secretary Raghav Ashtekar said the university should initiate action against the erring colleges, which have not appointed regular directors of physical education. "The university has also not appointed its full-time sports director from 1998 but has only an assistant sports director," he said.

The Puta office bearers also alleged that the sports facilities on the university campus are not sufficient, as it has only three sports grounds for basket ball, cricket and football without proper maintenance.

"The cricket ground is used as a helipad, which affects the ground," he said.

Puta secretary Deepak Shendkar said that though many physical education directors are eligible for the full-time posts of principal and director, the non-mention of MEd (physical education) and MPEd was preventing them from applying for the posts.

There are 215 posts of principals lying vacant in private unaided colleges having commerce, arts, science, education and law courses. And the university has a list of over 280 eligible candidates including the names of directors of physical education for the principals' posts from 33 colleges.
