Apple advises users to use iMessage instead of SMS
Technology giant, Apple has advised iPhone users, who are concerned over the security in SMs messages to switch to company's iMessage service instead of the general SMS service provided by the telecom carriers.
The recommendation came after a jailbreaking artist published a post detailing how a flaw in Apple's implementation of SMS in its software can be used to spoof SMS. Security researcher known as pod2g revealed that the flaw exists in all he version of iOS including new version 6.0, beta 4.
Apple said that when users use iMessage instead of SMS, a message is verified and this eliminates the chances of spoofing SMS. “One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they're directed to an unknown website or address over SMS,” the company said.
The flow may allow sender to alter the address that appears on its "from" line in SMS messages and this could be used to dupe users. Security experts say that after a the sender wins the trust of the received, the user can be lead to websites through malicious links in the message that are designed to steal sensitive information.
The SMS and MMS remain a huge revenue generating field for telecom carriers. There have been some third party apps offering alternative services but iMessage, that will be an integral part of iOS 5 and is available on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3rd/4th-gen and the iPad/iPad 2 will have a much wider user base and thus much significant impact.
