Aldi Expands National Lottery Access with Self-Checkout Integration
Aldi, the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket chain, has partnered with National Lottery operator Allwyn to introduce self-checkout access to lottery games across its UK stores. While National Lottery draw games have been available at Aldi since 2021, this marks the first time that self-service kiosks will facilitate ticket purchases.
With the rollout already underway in over 1,050 stores, the initiative is expected to be fully operational by spring 2024. This move enhances customer convenience, allowing shoppers to seamlessly purchase lottery tickets alongside their groceries. The initiative reflects Aldi’s commitment to modernizing its shopping experience, ensuring that customers have quick and easy access to lottery games.

Seamless Shopping Experience
Aldi’s decision to integrate National Lottery purchases into its self-checkout system is aimed at improving convenience for shoppers. Previously, lottery tickets were only available through store employees at designated tills. Now, with self-service kiosks supporting ticket sales, customers can complete their lottery purchases without waiting in line.
Games Available: Lucky Dip tickets for Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball, and Set For Life
Self-Scanning Feature: Customers with a National Lottery Fast Pay card can scan their card to generate a bespoke ticket instantly
Convenience Factor: Customers can buy lottery tickets while shopping, making the process quicker and hassle-free
With this expansion, Aldi has positioned itself as one of the first major supermarkets to launch this service nationwide, reinforcing its customer-first approach.
Aldi and Allwyn Strengthen Partnership
Retail Transformation in Action
The move is part of Allwyn’s larger strategy to enhance the accessibility of the National Lottery. By adapting to changing retail trends, Allwyn aims to increase participation and engagement through modernized store layouts and digital integration.
Richard Thornton, Aldi’s Communications Director, emphasized the customer-centric nature of this initiative:
“We’re always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers, which is why we’ve made it even easier to enter the National Lottery while picking up essentials at our self-checkouts.”
Meanwhile, Jenny Blogg, Operations Director at Allwyn, highlighted the strategic importance of expanding the National Lottery’s reach:
“This will ultimately see The National Lottery available at every single touchpoint in Aldi’s customer journey, helping us to reach even more players.”
This rollout is part of Aldi’s broader efforts to enhance digital convenience, reflecting shifts in consumer preferences toward self-service retail experiences.
What This Means for Aldi Customers
More Convenience, More Opportunities
The integration of National Lottery ticket sales at self-checkouts introduces multiple benefits for Aldi customers:
✅ No Need to Wait at Main Tills – Customers can now buy tickets independently while completing their grocery shopping.
✅ Fast and Easy Lottery Participation – A quick scan or touchscreen selection enables instant ticket purchases.
✅ Wider Access to Games – Major National Lottery games, including Lotto, EuroMillions, and Thunderball, are now accessible at every self-checkout.
Age Verification for Responsible Gaming
To ensure compliance with UK gambling regulations, an Aldi employee will conduct an age verification check before completing the transaction. This prevents underage participation and reinforces responsible gaming practices.
