Advani to meet President Patil over Gujarat Lokayukta appointment issue

Advani to meet President Patil over Gujarat Lokayukta appointment issueNew Delhi, Sep 2 : Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani is likely to meet President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Friday to register his party''s protest over the controversial appointment of retired high court judge RA Mehta as the new Lokayukta of Gujarat.

Advani''s meeting with President Patil comes a day after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi asked the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, to recall Gujarat Governor Dr. Kamla Beniwal for violating constitutional norms in appointing Justice (retired) Mehta as the state''s Lokayukta.

Advani is expected to discuss the Gujarat Lokayukta issue with senior party colleagues Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley ahead of his scheduled meeting with President Patil.

Terming the appointment of Lokayukta in Gujarat to be an attack on the democratic structure of the country, Advani had on August 30 said that he would soon meet President Patil on the issue

"We are going to meet the President on September 1 or 2 when she returns to the capital. All norms were ignored by the Governor like consultation with the Chief Minister before the appointment or taking the advice of his Cabinet on the issue," Advani had said.

"The Lokayukta was appointed by the Governor bypassing all established norms. Yes, we are going to meet the President over this," he added.

The BJP had given notices in both Houses of Parliament on August 30 for suspension of Question Hour to discuss the appointment of Lokayukta in Gujarat by the Governor.
