Challenging market conditions, including constrained supply of essential components, continued to affect Europe’s plug-in hybrid car segment in July 2022, fresh data revealed. Sharing EV Volumes data for last month, Jose Pontes revealed that more than 157,000 new passenger plug-in cars were registered in European markets. The figure represents a decline of 5 per cent year-over-year. However, the market share of the plug-in electric segment remained relatively strong at 19 per cent.

While all-electric cars (BEVs) actually performed well, recording a jump of 19 per cent in registrations or sales year-over-year; sales of plug-in hybrid cars declined 25 per cent in the month under review.

More precisely, July plug-in car registrations include 91,000 BEVs (up 19 per cent year-over-year with 11 per cent market share), and roughly 66,000 units of PHEVs (down 25 per cent year-over-year with 8 per cent market share). Total plug-in car registrations settled at 157,694 units.

Year to date (YTD), nearly 1.3 million new passenger plug-in electric vehicles were sold or registered in Europe. That is approximately 20 per cent of the total sales volume. In the January through July period of 2022, BEVs accounted for registrations of around 0.77 million units with 12 per cent of the market share; while PHEVs accounted for nearly 0.51 million units with 8 per cent market share. Total YTD registrations settled at 1,285,520 units with 20 per cent market share.

When it comes to top plug-in models, the Fiat 500 electric car emerged as the most registered electric model in Europe last month, with a total of 5,053 units registered. It was followed by three MEB-based electric models, viz. Volkswagen ID.4 (4,889 units), Skoda Enyaq iV (4,654) and Volkswagen ID.3 (3,697).

The list of top five electric models for the month under review was completed by the Renault Megane E-Tech, which got 3,549 units registered.

It is noteworthy as well as quite interesting to note here that the Cupra Born enjoyed a new record by getting 2,999 units registered, which allowed it to enter the list of top 10. An interesting thing is that only three PHEV models could manage to grab a spot in the top 20 plug-ins. The Hyundai Tucson PHEV emerged as the highest classified PHEV. It grabbed the 14th spot with a total of 2,608 units registered. After analyzing the aforementioned data, it will be interesting to see whether plug-in hybrid vehicles will return to form or gradually fade permanently to make a wider way for BEVs.
