Warne may pick and choose on Big Bash appearances

Warne may pick and choose on Big Bash appearancesMelbourne, Sep. 10: Veteran Australian leg spinner Shane Warne will be allowed to pick and choose which matches he will play in this year's Big Bash Twenty20 tournament, if he plays at all, says his manager.

The champion leg-spinner's appearance in the Big Bash tournament is clashing with his commentary duties on Channel Nine, for whom he will call the Melbourne and Sydney Tests, and ''''masses of business commitments'''', his manager, James Erskine, said.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Warne, who spends much of the year overseas for business, is also keen to spend the summer with his three children, but has indicated an interest in coming out of retirement to play in Australia''s domestic Twenty20 competition.

Warne and Erskine spoke to Eddie McGuire and James Brayshaw, the respective chairmen of Melbourne''s two teams, the Stars and the Renegades.

The Sydney Sixers, headed by Warne''s former Test teammate Stuart Clark, remain in the running but are considered outsiders to secure the Victorian''s services.

''''He lives in Melbourne, his family . and kids are there, it''s more likely he''ll do a deal with a Melbourne team,'''' Erskine said.

Warne, however, will not come cheaply and, as the salary cap will not accommodate the considerable fee he will command, any deal is likely to involve a large marketing component.

Erskine said it was possible Warne could sign a contract similar to that of Harry Kewell, whose salary with the A-League''s Melbourne Victory is tied to increases in attendances, memberships and merchandise sales.

''''He''s fully aware of what he brings to the party. He brings the crowds, the sponsorship, so he''s fully aware of his commercial clout; I certainly am anyway. To be brutally honest, everybody has said we''ll fit in with Shane [and] what he wants to do. I think I can safely say he''ll go to the one with the best deal,'''' Erskine said. (ANI)
