Undersea cable cuts might interrupt internet in India for two weeksAccording to a new report, the undersea cable connecting Indian systems have suffered various cuts and this is likely to impact internet connectivity in India for the coming two weeks.

The report released by Livemint quoted spokesperson from telecom service provider, Bharti Airtel, who said that there have been various cuts on SMW4, IMEWE and EIG cable systems and this has disrupted communications between India and Europe. The spokesperson said that the telecom company is already working with the cable companies to restore links and has normalised voice calls while internet connectivity is being provided by alternative channels.

The report also quoted Tata Communications spokesperson, who confirmed that SMW4 cable system has seen various cuts. The spokesperson also said that the work in underway to restore links and that the company has taken other measures to reroute customers in order to address service disruption in the country. Bharti Airtel is a part of the group that manages SMW4, IMEWE and EIG cable systems while Tata Communications is a part of the group that manages SMW4 and IMEWE cables.

The SMW4 or South East Asia-Middle East-West Europe 4 cable connects Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France. On the other hand, the IMEWE or India-Middle East-Western Europe cable connects India, Pakistan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Italy and France. The EIG or Europe India Gateway connects Portugal, Gibraltar, Monaco, France, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Oman and the UAE.
