New Delhi, Feb 1 : Expressing concern over steep rise in price of onions, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday said there is some fault in the retail market which needed to be checked out.

"The prices of onions should not be so high. Even after calculating the transport cost and taxes, the farmers get Rs. 1600 for hundred Kilograms, and those onions are being sold here for Rs. 35 per kilogram. There is definitely some fault in the retail, we need to find that fault," said Pawar, while speaking to reporters.

"On the matter of supply from states, we are keeping that in mind and we consider Sheila Dikshit''s suggestion and then take a final call," he added.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had written a letter to Pawar in the wake rising price of onions, seeking proper supply in the national capital.

Tariq Anwar, Minister of State for Agriculture, expressed hope that the fresh supply of onions would bring the prices down.

"This is not only a matter of the agriculture ministry only, the cap on prices is also regulated by the Finance Ministry and a collective decision is taken. The prices will decline after the fresh supply of onions in the market," said Anwar.

Onions are being sold in different parts of the country for more than rupees Rs. 30 per kilogram since Thursday, and on Friday morning, vendors and customers were shocked as the onions were sold at much higher prices. The manifold increase in the wholesale price rates is dearly affecting the vegetable vendors as well the consumers. (ANI)
