Indian religious bodies asked to identify needs of Malay-Indian community

Malaysia India CongressKuala Lumpur, Dec 29 : Indian religious organisations in Malaysia have been urged to identify what is needed for the development of the community and to work towards achieving the goals, Makkal Osai reported.

Retired Malaysian Indian Congress politician K. Kumaran made this call after attending a fund-raising dinner organised by the Sri Andalas Malaysian Hindu Sangam branch, held at the Executive Club in Klang on Saturday.

India, Malaysia to sign MoU for welfare of workers

MalaysiaKuala Lumpur, Dec 29 : Malaysia and India will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to streamline the recruitment and welfare of workers in the two countries.

Malaysia's Human Resources Minister Dr S. Subramaniam said the MoU is expected to be signed during his meeting with India's Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi in New Delhi on January 3.

The agreement is expected to lead to smoother management of labour and also iron out problems faced by Indian workers in Malaysia and Malaysian workers in India, The Star quoted him, as saying.

Singaporean man detained after Thai stepson found deadKuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have detained a Singaporean man and his wife, a Thai national, after his young stepson was found dead in his home with bruises on the body, hands, legs and head, a news report said Monday.

The victim, an 8-year old boy, was believed to have been abused before he died, said deputy district police chief Mohamad Akhir Ishak.

Neighbours called police Saturday afternoon after they heard a commotion in the boy's home in the southern Johor state, the Star daily reported.

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police have detained a Singaporean man and his wife, a Thai national, after his young stepson was found dead in his home with bruises on the body, hands, legs and head, a news report said Monday.

The victim, an 8-year old boy, was believed to have been abused before he died, said deputy district police chief Mohamad Akhir Ishak.

Neighbours called police Saturday afternoon after they heard a commotion in the boy's home in the southern Johor state, the Star daily reported.

"We discovered the body in the back room of the apartment," said Mohamad Akhir, adding that the post mortem result showed that the boy died from multiple injuries especially from those inflicted on the head.

Malaysia launches plan to double its wild tiger population by 2020

London, Dec 23 : Malaysia has launched a national plan to double the country's wild tiger population by 2020, which has fallen from 3,000 to 500 in the last 50 years.

The numbers of tigers in Malaysia have fallen sharply in recent decades because of the illegal hunting.

Now, according to a report by BBC News, conservation groups and the government have set an ambitious target of expanding the tiger population from 500 to around
1,000 over 12 years.

Known as the National Tiger Action Plan, the project is the government's first concerted effort to reverse the decline in tiger numbers, instead of merely slowing it.

Malaysian Premier Badawi arrives in Tehran
