Tata group to introduce the world’s cheapest water purifierThe Tata group has announced the launch of Tata Swatch, the world's cheapest water purifier. The purifier has been developed jointly by Tata group companies including, Tata Chemicals, TCS and Titan, which is aimed at curbing the water-related diseases.

In this project, Tata will invest Rs. 100 crore on manufacturing the purifiers and a huge amount on the marketing and advertisement Tata is expected to rely on the production in huge volumes as the margin in the product is very low. Tata has planned to provide affordable safe drinking water to 3 million households across India, during the coming five years.

Tata has introduced Swatch in competition with Unilever's Purelt, which is a big consumer goods manufacturer in India. Purelt will use distribution network of Tata group companies such as Rallis and the Tata Kisan Sansar. The Tata group, which is of worth $71-billion, has been involved with various mass utility projects and innovative products, which includes the supercomputer Eka.

The group was in news for one more time earlier this year, when it launched the world's cheapest car for just Rs. 100,000. Now the company has also entered into low cost housing.

At the time of the launch, the chairman of the Tata Group, Mr. Ratan Tata said, "The quest is not to create the cheapest products. Our focus is on accessing the largest number of people."

The Tata Swatch is Built around a bulb-like water purifier, made of natural elements such as rice husk ash filled with nano-silver particles, which is designed to function without electric power or running water. The cartridge bulb can kill bacteria and disease causing organisms with the help of a purification medium. It can purify up to 3,000 litres of water, after which the cartridge stops water flow. The Company has filed fifteen patents for the technology and product.
