Tablets and Tegra 2 Platform Unveiled by Nvidia at CES

While stressing that 2010 will be the "year of the tablet" at its Consumer Electronics Show 2010 press conference, Nvidia progressed to unveil its very latest Tegra 2 platform, which is running on a range of its tablets.

According to the company, it wanted these tablets to possess the performance of a personal computer, but with the energy efficiency of a mobile phone, and this is where the next-generation of Nvidia's Tegra platform comes in. It is equipped with a dual-core Cortex A9 processor, which is one of its 8 independent processors, which are also inclusive of a Geforce GPU.

As per Nvidia's claims, the Tegra 2 will be able to deliver 10 times the performance of a smartphone, while operating at a mere 500 milliwatts. Battery life, therefore, will be much better than machines running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon or Intel's Atom chips.

"If you want to buy a system that has days of battery life, has a great Web experience, but the Microsoft Office enterprise apps aren't necessary, then you buy this. I believe these devices will be significantly less expensive to build than a netbook. Our partners have talked about these devices retailing between $200-300, and that could get subsidized down to zero", said Mike Rayfield, Nvidia's General Manager for Mobile Products.
