Samsung announces its touch-screen Jet S8000 smartphone in U.K. Samsung divulged its touch-screen Jet S8000 smartphone in U.K. with high hopes to defy the Apple's iPhone.

Unlike the Omnia 2, which was also announced at the event, Samsung did have the Jet on hand for reporters to play with.

Jet S8000 will lure customers with its 800MHz processor, which should make it far faster than the iPhone 3G and Samsung's proprietary OS that includes its Dolphin Web browser. The handset is adorned with a 3.1-inch AMOLED screen that can present a striking 800x480 pixels.

Some other important features of the smartphone include connectors like 3.5mm headphone socket, a micro USB port, a 5-megapixel camera with a flash, built-in GPS, DNS and SRS Sound effect, DiVX and XVid video support et cetera.

Unfortunately, U.S. customers are not going to have it soon, though the rest of the world will have it later this year.

On the whole, the looks of the Jet S8000 are tempting. It's comparatively smaller than the iPhone and is more on par with the size of the Palm Pre.

Another phone, Omnia 2 was also announced at the event but it was not made available for reporters to play with.
