Rise in Number of Compound Flood Events in many US Coastal Cities

A novel study has unveiled that rising sea levels could prove quite dangerous for people. It has been said so as oceans could wash away almost two-fifths of all American homes. It is known that coastal cities aware how to deal with high tides, but researchers have affirmed that with passage of time, sea will become more unpredictable.

Combination of tidal, climatic and interactions between the ocean and existing infrastructure on the coasts can lead to heavy flooding and storm events. Over the last half century, a rise has been witnessed in such events.

In the study, the researchers have measured the frequency of high tide events and precipitation records of 30 states. This data was then compared with records dating back to early 20th century. It was found that heavy rains and high tides are becoming normal.

The research is vital as around 39% of the nation’s population live in coastal shoreline counties. The researchers said that coastal population is on rise and it is happening due to increased coastal development in those areas.

Changing storm dynamics and rising sea water due to climate change are putting more people at risk. “Our analysis showed that over the past century, the number of compound flood events for many US coastal cities has increased”, affirmed the researchers.

The data will help planners and local officials to having better knowledge on risks associated with flooding to housing, roads and other infrastructure.
