Riot at Foxconn’s Taiyuan factory

Riot at Foxconn’s Taiyuan factory A number of late-Sunday online postings revealed that a brawl involving thousands of employees of the Foxconn Technology Group factory in Taiyuan, north China, had led to a violent disturbance at the plant; with Foxconn forced to shut down the facility.

The pictures and videos which were posted online showed smashed windows of the buildings, overturned police cars, and huge crowds of people; thereby hinting at a riot at the factory which is owned by Taiwan-based company, Foxconn - the leading component-manufacturer for the Apple iPhone 5.

According to early reports about the incident, the riot was the result of a scuffle among the employees at the Taiyuan factory; with the situation getting out of hand when the brawl led to the eventual involvement of nearly
2,000employees from different Chinese provinces.

As per the reports by the state-run news media, the incident at the Taiyuan factory took such a violent turn that as many as 5,000 police officers had to be summoned to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, going by the details shared by Foxconn, the disturbance at the Taiyuan factory was triggered by "a personal dispute between several employees," including security guards, in a privately-managed dormitory for the staff. The company also added that "no production facilities or equipment have been affected" because of the employee unrest at the factory.
