Iraqi presidential council urges parliament to choose speaker soon

Iraq flagBaghdad - Iraq's presidential council on Tuesday decried the Iraqi parliament's failure to choose a speaker and urged all political parties to resolve the dispute by next week.

"The presidential council views the delay in electing the speaker of parliament with deep concern," the council said in a statement on Tuesday.

"As a symbol of Iraq's unity, the presidential council believes that any delay in the vote is harmful to the national interest."

19, his brother told Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa on Monday.

Maitham al-Zaidi told dpa that his brother is in a good health and that he is ready for the trial.

"All the family will attend the trial to support Montazer. We hope it will be a fair trial."

Maitham said that the trial, which was originally due in December 31, will be open for the press.

Iraqi pilgrim dies of gunshot wounds Baghdad  - A female pilgrim died of gunshot wounds on Sunday, a day after US forces "unintentionally" fired their weapons in southern Iraq. A second pilgrim was shot at the time.

A statement on the website of the Multi-National Forces in Iraq said the two Iraqis were shot after US soldiers "unintentionally" fired their guns on Saturday in the Iraqi province of Diwaniyah, 200 kilometres south of Baghdad.

But the statement stopped short of accepting responsibility for the civilian casualties.
