Maliki's coalition ahead in Iraq's provincial electionsBaghdad  - A coalition led by Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki won a majority of seats in Iraq's Basra province and a near majority in the capital of Baghdad, Iraq's electoral commission announced on Thursday.

In the southern province of Basra, al-Maliki's State of Law coalition won 20 out of the province's 35 seats, Iraqi news agency the Voices of Iraq (VOI) reported.

The province, known for its oil, is an important victory for the Iraqi premier.

Iraqi parliament to choose speaker in run-off vote Thursday

Iraq MapBaghdad - The Iraqi parliament is expected to choose a new speaker in a run-off vote on Thursday after lawmakers failed on Wednesday to end an impasse that has paralysed the assembly since late December.

Iraqi law gives Sunni lawmakers the responsibility of nominating the speaker of the parliament, but Sunni parties again failed to agree on a nominee Wednesday, despite increasing pressure from the rest of the Iraqi government to end the dispute.

"We had hoped to reach an agreement among the factions on a single candidate," deputy speaker Khalid al-Attiya told reporters on Wednesday.

German foreign minister in Iraq's Kurdish region to strength ties

Frank-Walter SteinmeierIraq - German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived on Wednesday in Iraq's northern Kurdish Autonomous Region in a visit expected to promote business and cultural ties with the relatively peaceful region.

Steinmeier is scheduled to open a German consulate and school in the predominantly Kurdish city of Arbil, where security is better than in the rest of Iraq.

He visited Baghdad on Tuesday in the first trip by a high-ranking German official since the US-led invasion in 2003.
