IAEA to discuss Indian safeguards pact

International Atomic Energy AgencyVienna, Aug 1: The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will meet here today for a crucial session to consider for approval a key step for the operationalisation of the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar will have a series of meetings to ensure a smooth sailing at the IAEA Board of Governors and the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

Visitors throng Taj Mahal to mark 353rd death anniversary of Shahjahan

Taj MahalAgra, July 31 : A large numbers of visitors thronged the famed Taj Mahal in Agra today to mark the 353rd death anniversary of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan.

The celebration which started on July 29 was concluded today with special prayers offered for communal harmony and to end terrorism.

A 400 metre long seven-coloured chadar (sheet) was laid on the graves of the Mughal emperor Shahjahan and his queen Mumtaz Mahal.

Planting of bombs was impossible without locals’ support: Gujarat police

Ahmedabad/ Surat, July 31 : The Gujarat Government and police believe that the planting of bombs in the city was impossible without the support of the locals.

A government official said: "Though the conspiracy has a pan-national angle, it could not have been possible without the local support."

Surat Police Commissioner R M S Brar said: "The terrorist operations of such massive scale is not possible without local support. The planting of bombs, the selection of places, transportation of explosive materials was impossible without their support."

Crime Branch conducts combing operations in Ahmedabad

AhmedabadAhmedabad, July 31 : In the wake of July 26 serial blasts in Ahmedabad city, which claimed 53 lives and injured over 140 people, the Crime Branch has carried out combing operations in various areas here today.

It has also detained several people for questioning, police said.

Joint Commissioner of Police H P Singh said, "Massive combing operations were conducted by different teams in various parts of the city last night. Several people have been detained for questioning. However, reports from all the teams are yet to be consolidated."
