SC cancels coal block allocations made between 1993 and 2009

coal-block-allocationsNew Delhi, Aug 25 : The Supreme Court (SC) today held that the coal block allocations made by the central government between the years 1993 and 2009 have been cancelled. The court said these allocations were made in a non-transparent and arbitrary manner.

The apex court today said that no objective criteria were followed and the guidelines were breached in coal block allocations.

Prashant-BhushanNew Delhi, Feb 15 : AAP leader and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan said Saturday the party had no option but to quit after the Jan Lokpal bill was rejected in the Delhi assembly.

Bhushan said the bill was the first promise made to the public of Delhi.

"Our biggest responsibility was to form a corruption-free government and run it, but if the BJP and the Congress are not letting us pass the bill, then what is the point of us staying in power," he said.

"We need more quality judges who should be appointed through a transparent selection process and who are accountable for their actions," noted lawyer and transparency activist Prashant Bhushan said.

Prashant Bhushan, in a recent interview to Tehelka magazine, raised the issue of judicial corruption and also whether a judge having any stake in a business firm should hear and decide cases involving the firm.
