Turkey-a bridge between Europe and Asia: Sibal

Kapil SibalNew Delhi, Nov 21 : Union Minister for Science and Technology Kabil Sibal addressing a business meet in the presence of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Turkey is a strategic country that can prove to be a bridge between Europe and Asia.

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) meeting in New Delhi, Sibal observed that Turkey can cash in the opportunities that both Europe and Asia provide.

India needs ICT revolution to move forward: Kapil Sibal

Kapil SibalNew Delhi, Nov. 4 : Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Ocean Development Kapil Sibal has said the country needs an Information Communication and Technology (ICT) revolution if it has to move forward.

Speaking at the 55th Convocation Day of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) here over the weekend, Sibal said that ICT should be recognized as the vehicle of success and growth of the nation and initiatives should be taken at political level.

Kapil Sibal inaugurates Indo-German Science and Technology Centre

Kapil SinbalNew Delhi, Sept 9 : Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal along with his counterpart Dr. Annette Schavan, Federal Minister of Education and Research inaugurated the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre, here today.

The Centre was announced during the visit of Prime Minister to Germany in April 2008 and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up of the Centre was signed by Sibal and Dr. Schavan in October 2007 during the visit of German Chancellor to India.

India, Canada Launch 10 Joint Science And Technology Initiatives

India and Canada have jointly launched ten initiatives worth USD 17 millionKapil Sibal, India’s Union Minister Of Science And Technology And Earth Sciences in the Science and Technology segment as part of a deal signed between them in 2005.

All the projects are co-funded by the federal government’s International Science and Technology Partnerships Program.

Normal monsoon expected this year: Kapil Sibal

Kapil SibalNew Delhi, Apr 16 : Union Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said that monsoon rains in the country are likely to be near normal this year.

“According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, we expect 2008 South Western monsoon from June to September. If you look at the weather condition of the entire country, it is going to be almost normal. It (rainfall) will be between 96 to104 per cent of the 50-year average,” said Sibal.

The government would update its forecast in June.

Last year, it had forecast the monsoon to be 95 percent of the average, but rains came in at 105 percent.

Seabed-mining ship Sagar Nidhi joins Indian fleet

Union Science & Technology Minister Kapil SibalChennai, Mar 03: Union Science & Technology Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday dedicated the oceanographic research vessel Sagar Nidhi to the nation in Chennai in the presence of Shipping and Surface Transport Minister T R Balu at the Chennai port trust.

The third research vessel after Sagar Purvi and Sagar Paschimi, the Italian-built Sagar Nidhi is set to launch submersible capsules capable of taking scientists to a depth of six km below the sea level.

Partnerships key to overcoming climate change challenge: Sibal

Kapil SibalNew Delhi, Jan. 21 : Union Minister for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, Kapil Sibal, today said that there were four kinds of technologies prevalent in the world today that could facilitate climate change.

First, those that can be used by the small and medium enterprises that are otherwise very polluting. For example technology that converts waste to energy. India’s agricultural wastes have a total potential of yielding 80,000 MW of power.

Second, water technologies that result in converting polluted water to drinking water.

The education system of India needs a complete make-over and should adopt skill and knowledge based education to get employable graduates, said Sibal.
